Some of the worst resume mistakes are also the easiest to avoid. Today, I’d like to discuss these Resume Mistakes that are almost guaranteed to cost you an interview!

1. Errors in Correspondence:

Simple grammatical errors in correspondence can be killer. Take the time to proofread resumes, cover letters, email inquiries, and all other correspondence before you hit the send button or lick the stamp. Lack of attention to detail can sent your resume hurtling toward the circular file, so be sure to proofread.

2. To Whom It May Concern:

This common greeting can also show a lack of attention to detail, especially if the hiring manager’s name is clearly listed on the company website. When in doubt, do a little research. Take the time to look up the company  online, and find the hiring manager. If the information is not available, call the company and ask. If you still cannot find the needed information, use a greeting such as “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear Human Resources Manager”

3. Unprofessionalism: Unprofessional behavior can cost you a job interview. Before you add contact information to a resume, be sure that the impression the hiring manager will get is a positive one. For example: jane.doe@youremail.com gives off a much better impression that sexyhottiexxoo@youremail.com. Take the time to set up a professional email account in your name. Be sure your outgoing voicemail greeting is professional and polite, as well. Take the time to send professional email responses, as well. This time and energy will pay off!
