When completing a resume, it is important to tailor it for each position you are interested in. Do not send out a one size fits all resume, and hope it works for multiple positions. Instead, take the time to analyze each ad carefully. Pick and choose what skills the interviewer may be looking for, and design your resume to showcase these skills.

Let’s use this sample ad:

Non Resident or Resident Project Manager
For 144 Unit Apartment
Complex . Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the
following: Managing daily
operations, Supervising maintenance staff, Leasing apartments, Computerized Book Keeping, Project Management Required,
Computer Proficiency and Knowledge of Quick Books and Excel Desired. Excellent Compensation package for qualified individual.

As you can see, the ad is very useful when designing the resume. When applying for this position, you would want to highlight your supervision and management skills, as well as your computer experience.  Using strong power verbs like organized, managed, supervised, and so on will help the potential employer to easily see how you match the qualifications he or she desires. Be sure to list number of years of experience in each area, and quantify whenever possible.

When applying for your next job, don’t just clip out the ad and set it aside. Analyze the ad for every scrap of information you can gather, and use it to your advantage! You’ll be glad you did.
