After a job interview, it is essential to take the time to write a thank you letter. Doing so sets  you apart from the other candidates, and helps you to stand out in the mind of the interviewer. If you’re debating whether a thank you letter is really “that” important, let these reasons help you make up your mind.

  1. Thank You Letters Keep You Fresh in the Interviewers Mind  After a series of interviews, applicants can begin to run together. Sending a thank you letter gives the interviewer another chance to see your name, and to match a face with your resume.
  2. Thank You Letters Reinforce that You Want the Job Taking the time to write a thank you letter shows that you are vested in getting the job. It shows interest and dedication - qualities that employers are looking for in potential employees.
  3. Thank You Letters are a Polite Way to Decline a Job  If, after an interview, you decide that the job isn’t a good fit for you, a simple letter thanking the interviewer for his or her time and withdrawing your application is an easy way to save frustration for all parties. It allows you to decline the job politely, without burning bridges in case you need a job with the company in the future.
  4. Thank You Letters Provide an Opportunity for Follow Up  If you walked out of the interview kicking yourself for not mentioning several of your more stellar skills, a thank you letter can be the perfect opportunity to highlight them. Take this opportunity to discuss items you didn’t get a chance to cover in the interview.

As you write your thank you letter, be sure to proofread for spelling and grammar errors. It is traditional to send your letter out no more than 24 hours after your interview, but even if you’ve waited a little longer, it’s better to send late than to not send at all. Take the time to write that letter today - it will help you to stand out in your potential employer’s mind.
